An Open Application for a Job I Cannot Get

Anthropic will pay $600,000 for someone to shape its IPO story. On the résumé as SEO, the machine that reads everything, and the screen that reads nothing.

By Austin Ripmaster · July 2026

Anthropic is hiring someone to shape its IPO story. The posting tops out at $600,000 a year. I saw the number and got sincerely excited. Then I read the requirements twice and did the math. I am not qualified. Not close. Not arguably. Not with a generous screen. I cannot win this job.

So I am doing the next best thing: applying anyway, in public, where the application cannot be filtered, in the honest hope that one of you lot will pay me instead.

Motive disclosed. Now the qualifications, in order.

Experience in investor relations, equity research, investment banking, or a comparable capital markets role

I have none. I spent those years at Nike and adidas learning why a nine-year-old in Lagos saves for a jersey with a stranger’s name on the back. There is no keyword for that. That is the problem with keywords.

Ability to build and maintain financial models

I cannot. I can tell you what a brand is worth when you cover the logo, which is the only model retail investors actually run.

Experience interacting directly with institutional investors

I once stood in front of a room of German executives and explained why their hundred-year-old company had started sounding like everyone else. Close. But the string will not match. Strings never do.

Demonstrated judgment handling confidential and market-sensitive information

I have a client so confidential that the confidentiality is the credential. You have never heard me say the name. You never will. The system cannot verify this, because the proof of the qualification is its own absence. The best evidence disqualifies itself.

Zero for four. The screen takes eight seconds. Eight is generous. And if an Anthropic recruiter is somehow reading this: hello. Take your time. There is no keyword field below.

Here is why the screen is the story. The résumé is search engine optimization for the labor market. It always was.

And like all optimization, it is applied one reasonable step at a time.

First you update the title. Everyone updates the title. Manager becomes Director in a description field, and a description field harms no one.

Then you add the keywords. The scanner needs the keywords. You are not lying. You are translating yourself into a language the machine can rank.

Then you post. Three insights and a question, formatted for engagement. You watch worse ideas do bigger numbers, so you adjust the ideas. You have seen this post. You may have written this post. I have written this post.

Then one morning you describe yourself as a storyteller inside a document formatted to defeat reading.

Nobody chooses the wig.
Everybody applies the makeup one rational layer at a time.
Each step is defensible. The sum is a clown.

SEO died this exact death. Keyword density was rational. Link farms were rational. Ten thousand words of content written for a crawler was rational. Then the machines learned to read, and twenty years of rational steps stood revealed as face paint.

The labor market is simply twenty years behind its own funeral. The machines read now. They read everything. The body of work is the application. The résumé is a ritual performed for a god that already left the building.

The same hands, at altitude

Now watch the same hands at work at the highest altitude in the economy. Build the machine that reads everything. Rational. Grow to a $965 billion valuation on the strength of it. Rational. File to go public on June 1 and enter the quiet period. Required by law. Then post a keyword-gated job to find the person who will explain the machine that reads everything, screened by a machine that reads nothing.

And there is the nose.

I am not above any of this. I am publishing an essay and calling it an application, which is its own layer of paint. The difference is that I know what is on my face, and I put it on in public, and you are reading the work instead of scanning it. That is the entire pitch.

What the req misses

On June 1 the lawyers silenced the storyteller. For the months that matter most, the company whose product tells everyone else’s story cannot promote its own. Whatever is already written is the pitch. The corpus speaks in its place.

And this offering has a property no offering in history has had: retail investors will do their diligence by asking the product. They will open Claude and ask whether to buy Anthropic. The machine will read its own prospectus.

The job req is aimed entirely at institutions. Analysts. Funds. Models. Nobody at the company is hired to own the story the public actually hears.

Disclosure

Full disclosure, because the rules require it and because it is the best part: I stress-tested this essay with the product of the company in question. I asked Claude whether I was qualified for the role. It read the posting, read my record, and said no on the strings, yes on the work. It was polite about it.

A machine that tells you no is worth $965 billion. A machine that tells you what you want to hear is worth nothing.

Several agencies I have shared conference rooms with should sit with that sentence.

So consider this the application. It will not survive the applicant tracking system. It was not written for the applicant tracking system. It was written for the reader the tracking system pretends to be.

I run Rebel.Rebel, an independent research and editorial practice for the retrieval age. We do not optimize for the crawler. We author the record the reader retrieves, and the reader is a machine now, whether it is screening your résumé or your brand. Same disease. Same cure. Take off the makeup. Write something worth reading.

Anthropic: my rate is less than $600,000, and the first week of work is above.

Everyone else: your category has a corpus too. Right now it is being written by people who are not you.
