Editorial for the retrieval age

Own the answer.

The discipline of deciding what deserves to enter the public record, and authoring it precisely enough to survive retrieval.

We write for the record. Machines are one of the readers.

Where it meets the instrument

Editorial begins where the prescription ends.

A baseline ends in a disposition and an editorial prescription: what must be repaired, in what order, and what the next Standing Wave™ should test. The prescription is written by the instrument and is included in the Assay™. It is what makes the work on this page surgical: a named failure, a named repair, no larger than the gap, and measured again when it is done.

Nothing on this page is included in it. Editorial is bought on its own terms, by retainer or by the piece, and a prescription is just as valid handed to the agency you already use. That separation is the point, not a technicality: a prescription written by the party paid to fill it is not a prescription.

Most clients bring it here anyway, and the reason is not convenience. The house that read the machines knows which sentence failed, in whose language, and against which competitor — and it has to face the same instrument again at the next wave. An arm that has to remeasure its own work writes differently from one that does not.

The separation is real, and so is the dependence. An instrument built by people who have never had to write the replacement sentence measures the wrong things: it counts mentions, because mentions are easy to count. Writing that has never been scored is opinion with a house style. Each arm is the reason the other is any good.

Research without editorial becomes observation. Editorial without research becomes opinion.

Score the sentence. Author the record. Run the sentence again.

The way in

The Dig is strategy. It ends in a sun, not a quadrant.

Most positioning work ends in a two-by-two: find the empty quadrant, plant a flag, and stand wherever the competitors are not, on ground that belongs to them. A Dig ends in candidate suns — the two or three gravitational centers the evidence will actually carry, built from the gaps the baseline found and what is true in the archive, and declared before the wave that measures whether the record moved toward them. A quadrant is a position relative to other people. A sun is a position relative to what is true.

$7,500. Two weeks on one subject: what the company is in named and dated facts, where its record came from and who wrote it, the commercial truth, the tensions held open, and an evidence register in which every claim is attributable.

And the sun the evidence will carry, built from the gaps the baseline found and declared before the wave that measures it. A position that survives its own measurement is worth more than one that was never at risk.

What you hold at the end of it, in six parts:

01 · The company

What it actually is, in named and dated facts.

02 · The record

Where the public record came from, and who wrote it.

03 · The commerce

How the business actually makes money, stated plainly.

04 · The tensions

The contradictions worth holding open rather than resolving early.

05 · The readers

Who is deciding, and what they are really asking.

06 · The register

An evidence register in which every claim is attributable.

A Dig produces no Retrieval score and no Fidelity score. It is not a baseline and is never dressed as one. Usually after the baseline, built from the gaps it found. Sometimes before it, when a pitch has to lead. Credited in full against an editorial program.

What editorial means

Editorial is not a content calendar.

It is two disciplines that only work together. Positioning: deciding what the company is the gravitational center of, from the evidence, and declaring it before it is measured. Authorship: deciding what deserves to enter the public record, and writing it precisely enough to survive retrieval.

Sometimes that means a canonical page, a specification, an interview, an archive, a technical paper, a founder record or independent authority. Sometimes it becomes a campaign, film, publication, product language or cultural object.

The format comes after the gap.

The repair plan

What an engagement holds after the measurement. Four functions, each driven from Assay results.

GOVERNANCE

The gate, held

Every piece, ours or anyone’s, is tried before it ships. Nothing ships below sterling. The lexicon and the banned list are enforced, not suggested.

CIRCULATION

The plan for travel

Owned fires first. Earned turns it into surfaces. Paid amplifies last, an accelerant, never a pillar. Depth over reach.

COMMISSIONS

The authored record

Papers, letters and field notes written to the house standard, entered in the registry, cited by number.

STANDING

The program

Quarterly: re-measure against the frozen battery, name drift early and specifically, strike new work to standard. Renewal is earned by the ledger, not the relationship.

Governance is the part that scales: a standard that works without us in the room.

The reality rule

A missing record can be authored.

A missing fact cannot.

If the evidence required by the desired representation does not exist, the repair belongs in the business first.

Do the work. Then write the record.

Circulation

The record has to travel.

Editorial does not end when the sentence is written.

A company does not have one record. It has evidence scattered across pages, products, people, partners, publications, retailers, interviews, films, reviews, archives and the people who talk about it when the company is not in the room.

The job is not to repeat the same claim everywhere. The job is to decide what deserves to travel, in what form, and with whose authority.

Editorial judgment is not just what to write. It is who to trust with it.

Every material Editorial engagement ends with a Custom Circulation Plan built from the measured failure.

The Assay tells us where the representation broke.

Editorial determines what evidence can repair it.

Circulation determines where that evidence should go.

Owned  ·  earned  ·  paid

Owned

What you can publish.

Canonical pages. Product and technical records. Executive language. Archives. Film. Newsrooms. Retail copy you control. Channels already belonging to the company.

Rebel.Rebel may author the work directly or give the architecture to the people already responsible for it.

Earned

What somebody else has to choose to carry.

Journalists. Trade publications. Podcasts. Long-form creators. Reviewers. Specialists. Institutions. Independent authorities.

We identify the evidence, the audience, the editorial case and the people worth approaching. We cannot promise their yes.

Paid

What you can deliberately place or amplify.

Media. Sponsorship. Creator partnerships. Commissioned editorial. Research programs. Film and other substantive work with bought reach behind it.

Paid can carry a true thing farther. It cannot make a thin thing true.

What you hold

The Custom Circulation Plan.

A finding-led editorial media plan for the record that needs to move. It identifies:

The failure

The representation failure being repaired.

The evidence

What needs to travel, and the sentence that evidence must be able to support.

Owned

The surfaces that should change first.

Earned

The authorities worth approaching. The publications, podcasts, long-form creators, specialists and communities relevant to the decision.

Paid

The role, if any, for amplification.

The object

The editorial object each surface can credibly carry.

The order

The order of operations, and who owns execution.

The next test

What the next Standing Wave should test.

Rebel.Rebel can work beside internal brand, marketing and communications teams and their existing PR, media, social and creator partners.

The diagnosis writes the circulation brief. The channel does not write the diagnosis.

The program

Governance and circulation, held. Everything else, commissioned.

The program is the retainer. A standard is not a deliverable and a circulation plan goes stale, so the two things that have to be continuous are the two things it holds. The Dig credits into it in full.

Held on retainer

Governance and circulation. A standard is not a deliverable and a circulation plan goes stale, so both are continuous or they are theatre. The Dig credits in full against a standing editorial program, which is why it is a first step rather than a pitch you pay for.

Commissioned case by case

Position work, Casted Narrative and authorship, long form and short. Each is a piece of work with an end, quoted against a measured deficit rather than a retainer that has to be filled.

Fractional and project

Where a team needs hands rather than a standard. Named scope, named end.

The limit

We do not sell someone else’s yes.

An editorial media plan is a deliverable. Earned coverage is not. A creator taking the story is not. A journalist printing the piece is not. An independent platform describing the evidence exactly as intended is not.

We can promise the diagnosis. We can promise the work we author. We can promise the circulation architecture and the handoff. We can work beside the people responsible for putting it into market. Then we can run the sentence again.

The plan is ours to make.

The independent answer is not ours to manufacture.

The House

Rebel.Rebel also operates its own permanent editorial platform. Where a House publication is part of an engagement, it is one surface we can actually promise, because it is ours. The relationship is disclosed. The evidence is sourced. The work still has to clear the House standard.

A commission can buy the work. It cannot buy a different standard.

House client editorial is not Touchstone, which remains independent research, published rather than sold. House client editorial is not Rebel.Rebel Press, which remains the House’s independent cultural-property imprint. Three jurisdictions, kept apart.

Partner work

Rebel.Rebel may make the work, or work beside the people already responsible for making it.

A strong agency can express the position. PR can create or carry authority. Media can amplify what deserves reach.

The diagnosis comes first.

Not another campaign brief. The record first.

House tools

Instruments for the room, not the slide.

The Assay measures what the machines have learned to say about a house. These three work on the other side of the problem: how a group actually makes something true together, under pressure.

They are separate House methods and none of them is part of The Assay™. Casted Narrative is how this arm does creative direction, and like every other kind of authored work it is commissioned on its own terms.

The Tension Map
The operating system

Sequencing contribution under pressure.

Most personality programs sort people. This one sequences contribution. Two questions generate four modes: Experimentalist, Catalyst, Harmoniser, Deductive. Not identities. The moves people reach for when uncertainty rises. Each one is necessary, and each one becomes dangerous left in charge too long.

The issue is rarely tension. The issue is bad sequencing.

High-performing groups do not eliminate tension. They design for it.

Casted Narrative
The model

Authored story worlds with castable brand roles.

Most branded content starts with the client and asks how to wrap a story around the product. This starts with a story that would matter anyway, then asks which brands deserve a role inside it.

Strategy becomes casting. Creative becomes world-building. Production becomes truth-protection. The output is owned narrative rather than disposable campaign.

A sponsor pays to be seen. A cast member pays to belong.

Author Again
The game

A creative-training game for teams.

One insight sits in the centre of the table. It does not change. Everyone builds. Everyone pitches. Anyone can call your idea a repeat, but they have to name what you repeated, and the table decides. Every surviving expression closes a route nobody can use again. The field shrinks. The game gets harder as it gets better. That is the point.

At the end, one question. Whose name goes on this.

Keep the insight. Change the move.

Editorial & the House

What does Rebel.Rebel mean by editorial?

Editorial is the discipline of deciding what deserves to enter the public record and authoring it precisely enough to survive retrieval. The Assay identifies the gap. Editorial determines what kind of repair the evidence warrants.

Are you an agency?

Not in the conventional model. We do not begin with a campaign brief or assume communication is the problem. We begin with measurement. If the measured problem eventually requires a campaign, film, publication, product language or other creative expression, Rebel.Rebel may make it or work with the client’s existing partners.

Do you replace our creative agency?

Usually not. A strong agency can be an excellent execution partner once the underlying representation problem is understood. Rebel.Rebel can define the evidence, position and editorial architecture; an existing agency can express it. We also make selectively when the work requires House authorship.

Is this PR?

No. PR may be one route inside the circulation plan when independent authority matters. Rebel.Rebel identifies what evidence needs authority, the editorial case it can honestly support, and the publications, specialists, creators or institutions worth approaching. The client’s communications team or PR partner may then earn the placement. We do not promise coverage. Earned means somebody else gets to say no.

Do you write for AI?

No. We write for the record. Machines are one of the readers. The objective is specific, attributable evidence written clearly enough to survive both human and machine reading.

Can we just publish more content?

More record is not necessarily better record. Generic material can make the representation more generic. The job is to put specific evidence where the machine currently has to guess.

What if the desired story is not true yet?

Then editorial stops. A missing record can be authored. A missing fact cannot. Do the work first.

Who executes the repair?

It depends on the failure. Management owns changes to the business. Rebel.Rebel may author selected editorial and creative work. Internal teams and existing agency, PR, media and creator partners may execute the wider circulation plan. Rebel.Rebel can stay beside those teams to protect the finding through execution. One diagnosis. Different hands.

What is a Custom Circulation Plan?

The editorial media architecture that follows the finding. It maps the evidence across owned, earned and paid: what should be authored, what needs independent authority, what deserves amplification, who should carry it, and in what order. It is not a promise that every surface will take the work. It is a plan for making the record less accidental.

Does Rebel.Rebel Press publish client work?

Not by default. Client editorial work and Rebel.Rebel Press are separate. Press is the House’s independent publishing imprint. Confidential client work remains confidential unless explicitly agreed otherwise.

Cases

These predate the instrument.

Every engagement below was run before The Assay existed. The judgment is the same, and most of the ideas survived into it. The measurement did not exist yet.

Nothing here was scored. Nothing here should be read as an instrument result. They are shown because they are the record of the operator, not evidence of the method.

The baseline writes the brief.

Each case begins with the measured or recovered condition, not the format we happened to make.

Embedded · run from inside the company

The Chance

Nike Global Football · 2010–2012

They will not wait their turn.

RollinGreens · 2019

Two claims, both dated, both testable against a company that no longer sells what it sold in 2019.

Shared by request, not published. Each case is a position-led argument in the house format, with the record and the receipts behind it.

How a case is written

Case studies must prove the House sequence, not behave like an agency reel.

The condition

What was true before we made anything.

The evidence

What the record could actually support.

The decision

What had to become different.

The position

The sentence the work could honestly carry.

The work

What was made.

The proof

What changed — and what we are not claiming.

The limit

What the case does not prove.

Lead with a line a CEO or operating partner can repeat. Images arrive after the finding.

Begin

Bring the decision. Closing the gap is our job.
