Dupe

The counterfeit economy of the self, and the one faculty underneath it. The first of the series.

By Austin Ripmaster · Faculty

Start with what is everywhere.

The dupe bag, indistinguishable at a glance, a fraction of the price, sold openly and worn proudly. The dupe lip combo. The dupe fragrance. The dupe of a whole aesthetic, copied off a feed and assembled in a weekend. The kids already have a word for all of it, and the word is exact. Dupe. A thing that mimics the signal of the real with none of what made it.

Now watch the word climb.

The filed jaw. The fat dissolved here and added there, the body optimized to a standard pulled off a screen. The maxed-out card keeping up with a street that was never real. The pose held for the light, the caption rewritten four times, the likes counted like a pulse. We do not call these dupes yet. They are the same move, one level up. A dupe bag is a counterfeit of a status object. A dupe self is a counterfeit of a status. Same forgery, bigger target.

And here is the part to hold gently, because it is the whole argument. The people doing this are not fools. They are rational players in a rigged casino. The machine told them there is a room, that the room is everything, and that the price of entry is the surgery, the card, the pose. They are paying the price they were quoted. The fraud is not the person. The fraud is the quote.

The gap

Because there is a real thing under all of it, and the dupe is the forgery of that real thing.

The real thing is belonging and status earned through judgment. It exists. It is not a myth the cynics can wave away. And every dupe is the expensive answer to a question that only judgment answers correctly. The bag is the expensive answer to do I have taste. The jaw is the expensive answer to am I worth looking at. The feed is the expensive answer to am I seen. Expensive, because money is the only tool left when the other one was never handed to you. And the other one is judgment.

That is the gap. Under the entire counterfeit economy is a single missing faculty. Not money. Judgment, pointed at taste. The dupe is what rushes in to fill the gap when the faculty is gone.

The objection, and who it actually serves

It arrives fast and it sounds smart. Taste is just status. Judgment is just power in a nicer jacket. Correct is a fiction the comfortable invented to keep everyone else out. It is all construction, all games.

Follow that to the end and look at who is left standing.

If correct does not exist, the only thing left is expensive. And expensive is owned by money. The cynic thinks he is tearing down the elite. He is handing them the field. Because the moment you abolish correct, the richest signal wins by default, automatically, forever. The broke kid with the eye only beats the rich kid with the card in a world where correct is real and can be learned. Take correct away and the card wins every time.

So the democratic claim, the real one, is the opposite of the cynic's. Correct is real. Judgment is real. And neither is owned by any class. That is not the snob's position. It is the only position that gives the person without money a way in.

The cage, and the file in it

The strongest version of the cynic's case has a name. Pierre Bourdieu spent a career proving that taste reproduces class, that what feels like personal preference was installed by your upbringing so early and so deep that you carry your origin into every room and are read by it on sight. He called that installed set of dispositions habitus, and he was largely right about how it has worked. Habitus is a cage, and most people never touch the bars.

But I know a man who walks straight through it. A broke artist, a photographer, no money and no pedigree, and he glides through any room with anyone in it. By Bourdieu's logic he should be marked by his origin the second he opens his mouth. Instead his judgment owes nothing to where he came from, and the room quietly reorganizes around him. Meanwhile the heir two feet away, the one with the correct habitus by every measure Bourdieu would name, is the most tasteless person standing there.

Same proof, both ends. The broke man who trained the faculty out-tastes the room. The rich man who skipped the training is lost in it. So the variable was never the money.

And here is the thing the cynics miss and the old families never did. The families that actually keep taste across generations do not keep it because of the money. They keep it because they put the children through brutal lessons precisely so the money does not rot them. The ones who get handed the keys instead of the lessons become the loud, lost heirs everyone clocks in a second. Even inside wealth, the variable was the teaching. And teaching is portable. It can be run by anyone, anywhere, on any budget. The cage has a file in it, and the file is a curriculum.

The faculty

So strip it all the way down.

Taste is the output. Judgment is the faculty underneath. And a faculty, unlike a gift and unlike a bloodline, is built the way a body is built. By reps. By looking more, getting it wrong, sitting with why, and looking again. By proximity to the real thing for long enough to stop mistaking the copy for it. The eye is not given. The eye is trained.

Which makes judgment a human right, in the exact sense that training your body is a right. Available to everyone. Guaranteed to no one. Universally open, unevenly developed, like every other thing a person can practice. That is not elitism. That is just true of any exercise. The snob says the eye is born. The cynic says the eye is a lie. They are both wrong, and they are both, quietly, working the same side of the street.

And notice what the opposite of a dupe actually is. It is not the expensive original. The real bag and its dupe are both status objects, one just costs more. The opposite of a dupe is the authored thing. The object, the room, the self, made by judgment instead of mimicry. Authored has no price. A grandmother's three-ingredient sauce is authored. A ten-thousand-dollar empty room is a dupe with a bigger budget.

What follows

This is the first of a series about the faculty and how it is built. It breaks into pieces you can actually train.

Attention, the root, because you can only judge what you truly look at. Discernment, the distinction that matters, apprenticed and never bought. Judgment, choosing well when no rule fits. Sovereignty, the head that does not turn to the richer room. And restraint, the confidence to leave things out. Each one is a muscle. None of them has a price of entry.

Two pairs of words carry the whole series. Expensive and correct. Dupe and authored. One side is rented and decays the moment the trend moves on. The other is owned and compounds for life.

The casino is still running. The quote is still posted on the wall. The way out was never a better dupe. It is the faculty they forgot to tell you was yours.

The rep. Go to the thing you own that you most want other people to notice. Ask one question and answer it honestly: did I choose this, or did I copy it? Not whether it was expensive or cheap, real or dupe. Only whether the decision was yours. Then go and find something you own that nobody ever notices, that you would replace tomorrow with exactly the same thing. Sit with the difference between the two objects. The second one is the authored one, and it is the only one telling you anything true about your eye.

The pull-line. The opposite of a dupe is not the expensive original. It is the authored thing.
